Frequently Asked Questions About Indiana Black Pride:

  1. Why did you form Indiana Black Pride?
We felt that Indiana needed an organization that could address the unique needs of individuals that are both African-American and LGBT-identified (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender).
  2. Why didn't you just work with Indy Pride? Why did you have to separate yourselves?
We are working with Indy Pride. Our organization is not about separation. It is about serving a community that has not been reached.
As African-American gays and lesbians, we are in a unique position to address the heterosexism and racism we receive in a way other community organizations cannot.
  3. Is your organization just concerned with a summer festival?
No. We wanted to throw a summer festival this year for exposure. Plus, everyone loves a party.
However, we strive to be a year-round organization that offers different programs and services that address the needs of our community.
  4. Is Indiana ready for your organization?
Yes, we think so. Indiana needs an organization that can help bridge the gap between black gay men and lesbians.
  5. Are you a social club or a business organization?
We are a non-profit business organization. We are registered in the state of Indiana as a non-profit corporation.
  6. Do you have 501(c) 3 exemption?
    Yes, we do.
  7. What are the things your organization believes in?
Our mission statement reflects our beliefs. Indiana Black Pride is a grassroots organization dedicated to efforts that nurture pride and unity within the African-American same-gender-loving gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community.
  8. How do you define pride?
We feel that pride is Unity, Commitment, Empowerment, Strength, and Knowledge. Therefore, our programs and services are aimed at creating these things within our community.
  9. Are your board members just gay males or just lesbians?
No. We have a mixed-gender board. We feel that Indiana Black Pride should be for all of the Indiana black LGBT community. Therefore, our board must reflect that.
  10. Can people who are not black get involved?
Absolutely. We want to be able to address specific needs of the black LGBT community; we do not want to exclude anyone who can help us in our goals.
